DIY chalkboard laptop
I saw the chalkboard laptop below, a few months ago on a few different websites and REALLY wanted it for Clèmence. We are taking a few trips this summer and thought about how perfect this would be to help pass the time on a flight or while driving. So I devised a plan to make one myself. The wood I chose was thinner so it makes the laptop more light-weight and easier to bring along anywhere…even just to a restaurant.
Here is what you need:
1 sheet of birch plywood (1/8x12x24) cut into 2 12 x 9.5 pieces
Hand saw if you are cutting the pieces yourself
Sanding sponge or sand paper to smooth the edges after cutting 2 pieces
2 small hinges
Chalkboard spray paint
White paint (optional if you want to keep the wood color)
Painters tape
Fabric and a sewing machine also optional to make the chalk pouch
And chalk of course!
Here is how you make it:
Measure and cut your 2 pieces of wood. Tape off one piece to create a thin border around all four sides (mine is about a 1/4 of an inch). Take the second piece and tape off the same border on three of the sides but only going about 4 1/2 inches down, creating a rectangle (see photo). Spray the 2 pieces in the areas you have taped off. Once dry paint the rest of the wood around the chalkboard areas white. When all the paint is fully dry, align the 2 pieces together with the chalkboard sides touching, and attach the hinges about 2 inches in from both ends. Using some fun fabric make a small pouch and stitch rows for the chalk to fit in. Give your little babe some chalk and let them get creative!
